Meet Our Staff

Minnehaha Animal Hospital has served our South Minneapolis neighborhood for over 25 years. We are committed to promoting responsible pet ownership, preventative health care and health-related educational opportunities for our clients.

Dr. Joyce Tesarek, Veterinarian, Practice Owner

Dr. Joyce has been intrigued with animals for as long as she can remember. It was no surprise when she took that love to a new level and attended veterinary medical school after college. Now, with more than 20 years of experience, she still connects with animals on a personal basis.

When not attending to her 4 cats, Dr. Joyce spends her time overseeing operations at both Minnehaha Animal Hospital and partner clinic, Pet Doctors. Although the owner and Hospital Director, she still consults on cases at both facilities.

Those that know Dr. Joyce will attest that she is a bundle of energy. One of her greatest passions (other than animals!) is celebrating her roots by participating in local and international Czech activities. She is also an active community and church volunteer, and in her profession. She likes to spend any other free time studying the Enneagram, traveling, gardening and hanging out with family and friends. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Norm and cats, Panda, Radar, Kitty and Margo.

Dr. Tonia Stephani, Veterinarian

Dr. Tonia Stephani earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, and worked for several years at the Minnesota Department of Health before returning to the University of Minnesota and graduating with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. She has been a member of the staff at Minnehaha Animal Hospital since September of 2001.

In her free time, Dr. Tonia enjoys reading, gardening, working on home improvement projects, and spending time with her family. Her faithful companions are her dog Squirrel, box turtle Ira and Fuego the cat.

Dr. Rachel Meloy, Veterinarian, Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist

Dr. Rachel Meloy earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2001 from Iowa State University. After graduating, she completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery near Washington DC and continued to work in northern Virginia until moving to Minneapolis in 2003. She joined the staff at MAH in the spring on 2004. Dr. Rachel was certified in Medical Acupuncture through Colorado State University in May 2009. Her professional interests include pain management, hospice care and greyhound adoption.Rachel lives with her husband Brian and their greyhound Indy in South Minneapolis. She enjoys travel, running, listening to live music, and any outdoor activity.

Dr. Tom Schuld, Veterinarian

Dr. Tom Schuld joined Minnehaha Animal Hospital at the end of March 2008. After earning his MBA at the University of Minnesota and spending 13 years in the corporate world, he decided to pursue his passion by returning to the U of M and completed his veterinary training in 2002. Since that time, he has been in small animal practice in the Twin Cities area. Tom’s special veterinary interests include general medicine, dentistry and surgery including some orthopedic procedures.

In 2013, Dr. Schuld traveled to Ecuador on a volunteer spay/neuter project with WorldVets. It was there that he met a little street dog who cuddled up beside him and quickly won his heart. That little dog, now named Chula, resides with Tom, his wife Sandra, a very sassy calico cat named Annabelle and an orange tabby named Cecil the Lionhearted who has become Tom's shadow.

When not at the hospital, Tom enjoys spending time with Sandra, with his daughter and, when they are back home, his two college-aged sons. He also enjoys doing volunteer work, home renovation, cooking, baking, biking, fishing or basically any outdoor activity.

Dr. Bobbi Soule, Veterinarian, Medical Director

Dr. Soule earned her Bachelor of Science at the University of Notre Dame in 2000. While there, she was actively involved in the marching, concert and jazz bands playing her trumpet. She next went to the University of Minnesota and got her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. Right after graduation, she began work at a clinic in Bloomington. She was there for seven years. She started working for Minnehaha Animal Hospital and Pet Doctors near the end of 2011. Her special interests include feline medicine, soft tissue surgery and internal medicine.

At home, she has a yellow lab named Miles and three cats, Koa, Madeline and James. In her free time she enjoys listening to, and playing, music.

Dr. Kevin Thorsgaard, Veterinarian

Dr. Kevin Thorsgaard joined the team at Minnehaha Animal Hospital in February 2013. Kevin grew up in Bloomington, and earned a Biology degree at St. Olaf College in Northfield, where he learned it was possible to combine his interests in science, medicine and animals into one rewarding career. He attended the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1990. Since then, working in private practices in the Twin Cities has given him the opportunity to meet thousands of people and help them take care of their special pets. Kevin enjoys the challenge of solving medical mysteries, providing excellent preventative care, performing a variety of surgical procedures, and working closely with owners to give their pets the happiest, longest life possible.

He enjoys most outdoor activities and travel, especially with his wife of 25 years, their two children, and Shelties Chip and Diego.

Dr.Nikko Grossapoulos, Veterinarian

Dr. Nikko Grossapoulos (a.k.a. Dr. G) is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Veterinary College. Prior to this, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology and Theatre Arts.

Before returning to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine, he was a small business owner for nearly a decade in his hometown of Chicago. Managing a successful business brought him valuable skills in client communication and how to manage a successful team.

Outside of veterinary medicine, he enjoys spending time with his husband and two daughters ages 8 and 5. Whenever they can, they take retreat to their cottage along the Mississippi River, just over the Minnesota border in the driftless region. There he enjoys fishing, gardening and spending quality family time where cell phones get no reception. He has been thrilled to finally become a practicing veterinarian after many years of hard work. Although returning to school was challenging with a growing family, he says that, “Veterinary medicine is an exciting field to be a part of and it has been truly rewarding to model to my children how you can be in love with your education and profession.”
